michigan voters statewide picked democrat barack obama by almost 10 points over republican mitt romney in the presidential race. which technically at least makes michigan a really blue state at one level, at the level where all of michigan's voters are voting on the same race. i know it looks weird that michigan is so blue in one way and so red in another, but i think that it looks weird because it is weird. i think it's weird by design. look at this. in the last election, hen they voted for new lawmakers in the michigan state house, more people in michigan voted for a democrat than voted for a republican. more people voted for a democrat. but even with more people voting democratic, the michigan house ended up with more republicans in it than democrats. so in one sense, republicans lost. they lost in the very traditional sense that they got fewer votes. but republicans won what counted, which is control of the house, which is why they are now taking away union rights and abortion rights, and they can ban sharia law if they decide that's a fun and important thing to do. the same thing

with the white house and republican leaders at a stalemate, president obama is hitting the road to rally support for his plan, which would raise taxes for the wealthiest americans. he met yesterday with house speaker john boehner, their first face to face meeting in more than three weeks. today the president will visit a detroit engine factory to rally support from auto workers. the president's meeting with speaker boehner didn't yield a big breakthrough, but the men did manage to agree on one thing, and that is that they will keep their negotiations behind closed doors. the men released this identical statement, saying this afternoon the president and speaker boehner met at the white house to discuss efforts to resolve the fiscal cliff. we're not reading out details of the conversation, but the lines of communication remain open. cnn's dan lothian is at the white house this morning. dan, i guess the fact that the lines of communication are open is a good sign. >> reporter: that's right. it is a good sign. it was just about a week ago that we were reporting about how nothing was going on
